One big fail in Google+ (Web) that I have come across recently is that the search bar goes away as the user scrolls down. It’s frustrating to have to scroll all over the place, just to do a simple search.

Usually, the reason for hiding the top bar is be to provide more screen real-estate for the content, but the strange thing here is that there is a sticky bar, and the bar has more than enough space to accommodate the search bar. It’s just the bar which contains the search is not the one that sticks. The issue feels self-imposed, a limitation of the way the header is split. The behavior, introduced in the not-so-recent UI refresh just feels like a big UX miss, and I wonder what urged them to make it this way.

It’s a wonder how Google can make this mistake, considering all the other social network heavy-weights seem to have this right. Search is what made Google what it is, so this flaw feels all the more wrong. Misleading user feedback, or a simple miss, I wonder?

It so happens every once in a while, that a Goliath is beaten by a David. I suppose this could go down as one of those instances…

Oracle Website Hacked

The question is, if Oracle’s own servers are not secure enough, what about the data they handle, and their famed DataBase Systems?

Let’s wait and watch how long it takes for them to get things up and running again!

(Edit 12:00 PM GMT): The site seems to be up and running again… That was fast! So fast, that it is possible it was just an internal mess-up. Wonder if the heavyweights will pick it up in the morning!

I’ve been noticing some strange activity statistics on my blog, Vox Intus. Would anyone have a clue? Did something change in Germany/Eastern Europe? Did I write something to pique their interest (highly unlikely!) Or is it simply someone hiding behind an anonymous proxy?

Strange Visitor Statistics

The other strange thing is, they seem to be using IE!

Well, anyways, good to see that blogger has got a good visitor tracking mechanism for daily overview. Makes things easier than going through Google Analytics every time.

Hey guys! I just implemented facebook comments on my blog, Vox Intus. What do you think?
It was a simple process really, as detailed here, but is it a change for the good? Is it better than the good ol’ blogger comments? Should I implement it here?

Thanks to this indecision, I’ve left blogger’s comments intact (as there doesn’t seem to be a way to migrate them,) and simply disabled the ability to post new comments..

Here’s the first Yahoo! Pipe I came up with. It’s mostly a mashup of all the feeds, Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Goodreads, and any other site that came to mind… And it’s pretty big. I could probably write up a decent tutorial, but instead, I guess I’ll just help out if anyone asks (now we all know, that’s not gonna happen!)

Yahoo Pipes

You guys can see it in more detail at my Yahoo! Pipes library

It wouldn’t be hard to guess the thing I miss the most about MNNIT. Yeah, that’s right! It’s the Internet Connection. Here’s a preview of what I did with it when I got the 2TB External—it went on for about two months, and then I ran out of space…

Those were the times! 10-12MBps (note: Its B, not b, so its about 100Mbps; cosumer broadband does not exceed 4Mbps,) and unlimited!

PS: There was one thing I missed even more! But I think I’d rather keep that to myself…
PPS: The internet we had was what I believe to be an Internet Leased Line. 100Mbps costs ₹2.5 Cr

Things have been quiet on the blog for a while now. I’ve been busy with foobar2000, the semester project, etc among other things. I’ve finally got time to post an update. I’ve been working on this (not quite so) new feature in Google Books, called My Library. It is to, in their words, “help people harness the power of Google search within their own personal book collections.”And it has somehow got me to set up the library, something I’d done back in an Orkut app in First year.

Well anyway, here’s the Library so far. It’s got almost all the books I’ve read in college (68 and counting) 😀

Here’s a li’l screen shot. I’m really grateful for this tool. And I must add, it’s one of the few things Google’s got right.

PS: As an afterthought, this not so new feature has been around since 2007, so I think it qualifies as old 😀

“Browser Wars” is a metaphor used to refer to the Market Share that each of the browsers have/enjoy (have it any way you please.) Here I compare how the same browsers compare in their share of this blog (Um yeah, I am a bit conceited.) Well anyway, here’s the data.

It is pretty obvious why IE has been losing out their market capitalization for a while now. You may not forgive me for presuming, but I’ll just assume you have and go right ahead (and like I’ve mentioned here, you would be better off forgiving.) In a blog visited almost entirely by the youth (but mainly engineers at that,) it is obvious that Mozilla and Google’s offerings have almost entirely overshadowed the Microsoft’s native Internet Explorer. This seems to suggest that any computer savvy person seems to prefer installing a browser besides IE.

While I keep track, I don’t often bother to change browsers just because something new is out. But it seems that even among the young folk, there are many who don’t seem to keep a track of their browsers and their updates. So I’m gonna go on one of my rants as to which browser to pick. In fact, I’m doing that even as you read this.
